Timberland Evaluation in Virginia

Assessing timber value and land health is essential for effective forest management. Our process begins with an introductory timberland evaluation which includes a determination of forest health, species composition, age class, site conditions, and forest management needs.

STEP 1, GET STARTED WITH AN INTRODUCTORY EVALUATION

Owning timberland is an investment that requires good planning and expert guidance. An introductory timberland evaluation is an informal meeting with you, the landowner, that helps us get a feel for your management objectives. The follow-up walk through inspection of your woodland enables our foresters to provide a brief summary of our findings and offer helpful management recommendations.

STEP 2 OF THE INTRODUCTORY TIMBERLAND EVALUATION PROCESS

After considering the recommendations from the Introductory Timberland Evaluation, landowners often elect to pursue some, or all of the suggestions made in the evaluation process. At this point a contractual arrangement known as a Consulting Forester Agreement is typically entered by both parties. Freelance Forestry becomes your project manager and handles every detail to successful completion whether it’s timber sales, timber cruising, management plans, or reforestation.

Frequently asked questions about timberland evaluations in Virginia
  • What is an introductory timberland evaluation?

An introductory timberland evaluation is an informal meeting with you, the landowner, that helps us get a feel for your management objectives. With this information and a follow-up walk through inspection of your woodland, we then provide a brief summary of our findings and offer general management recommendations in line with your stated forest management goals.

  • Why should I get my timberland evaluated?

An introductory timberland evaluation is the first step a landowner takes toward fitting the management goals they have in mind to the forest types and conditions that comprise their woodlands. Let our foresters help you make that step a productive one and guide you toward developing a healthy, sustainable, and profitable forest resource for the future.

  • How long does the process take?

These evaluations are dependent on property size and access challenges. Generally, a day or two is all that is needed. Larger tracts with access limitations may take a few days to a week. A follow-up meeting to discuss our findings and recommendations is arranged at the earliest convenient time for the landowner.

  • Do I need to be present during the evaluation?

It’s not required, but many landowners like to join the walk-through. This allows us to answer questions on-site and explain what we’re seeing in real time.
